If you're getting married in Alberta, securing your marriage licence is a key legal step. Unlike some provinces, Alberta doesn’t offer online applications—you’ll need to visit a registry office in person. But don’t worry—it’s a simple process as long as you arrive prepared.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Where to Get a Marriage Licence in Alberta

Marriage licences are issued through Alberta registry agents. You can find an authorized registry near you using the Alberta registry search tool.

Both parties must go together to apply in person.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a marriage licence in Alberta:

  • You must both be at least 18 years old.
     (If you're 16–17, you'll need parental consent.)
  • You must not be currently married.
  • You must not be closely related by blood or adoption.
  • You must be mentally capable of understanding the nature of marriage.

Same-sex marriages are legal and fully recognized in Alberta and across Canada.

What You’ll Need to Bring

Each person must bring:

  • One valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s licence, passport)
  • Personal information (full legal name, birth date, birthplace, parents’ full names and birthplaces)

You do not need to be an Alberta resident.

If either party has been divorced, bring the final divorce certificate or decree absolute. A divorce judgment or separation agreement is not accepted.

Cost of a Marriage Licence in Alberta

The fee varies by registry but is typically $80–$100 CAD. This is a one-time, non-refundable fee.

How Long Is It Valid?

An Alberta marriage licence is valid for 90 days from the date it’s issued. You must get married within this window.

There is no waiting period, so you can use it immediately after receiving it.

Other Alberta Marriage Rules

  • You must have a registered officiant (religious or civil) perform the ceremony.
  • The ceremony must take place within Alberta.
  • Two adult witnesses are required.
  • Blood tests are not required.

After your wedding, your officiant will submit the licence to Vital Statistics. You can then order your marriage certificate, which is the legal proof of marriage.
