Who Can Get Married in New Brunswick?
You are eligible to marry in New Brunswick if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Are not currently married
- Are not closely related by blood or adoption
- Are mentally competent to consent to marriage
If you are 16 or 17 years old, you may apply with written parental consent.
Same-sex marriages are legal and fully recognized. Residency in New Brunswick is not required.
What You’ll Need to Bring
Each person must provide:
- Government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s licence, passport)
- Birth certificate or information about your birthplace and full names of your parents (some offices may request this)
- Original or certified copy of divorce certificate (if previously married)

The cost of a marriage licence is $115 CAD, payable at the time of application. This fee is non-refundable.
How Long Is It Valid?
Marriage licences in New Brunswick are valid for 3 months (90 days) from the date of issue.
There is no waiting period, so you may get married as soon as the licence is issued, as long as all other requirements are met.
After the Wedding
Your officiant will submit your signed marriage licence to Vital Statistics. Once it has been processed, you may request an official marriage certificate as proof of the union.
