If you're planning a wedding in the Northwest Territories—whether in Yellowknife or a remote northern lodge—getting legally married starts with applying for a marriage licence. The process is straightforward, but it must be done in person and well within your wedding timeline.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting your marriage licence in the NWT.
Where to Get a Marriage Licence in the NWT
Marriage licences are issued by Marriage Licence Issuers appointed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. These are located in various communities across the territory, including Yellowknife.
Both applicants must be present in person to apply. You cannot apply online or by proxy.

Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for a marriage licence in the NWT, both individuals must:
- Be at least 19 years old
(Those aged 16–18 can apply with written parental consent) - Be mentally competent to marry
- Be not currently married
- Not be closely related by blood or adoption
Same-sex marriages are fully legal in the NWT. You do not need to be a resident of the territory to get married there.
What You’ll Need to Bring
Each applicant must bring:
- Government-issued photo ID
- Full legal name, place of birth, and parents’ names and birthplaces
- Final divorce certificate or decree absolute (if applicable)
- Death certificate (if widowed)
Your issuer may request additional details, so it’s best to call ahead and confirm requirements before your visit.
Marriage Licence Fee in the NWT
The cost of a marriage licence in the Northwest Territories is $60 CAD.
This fee is paid at the time of application and is non-refundable.
How Long Is It Valid?
Marriage licences are valid for 3 months (90 days) from the date they are issued.
There is no waiting period, meaning you can marry as soon as you have the licence—assuming your officiant and witnesses are ready.
After the Wedding
Your officiant will submit the signed marriage licence to Vital Statistics. Once registered, you can apply for an official marriage certificate, which serves as your legal proof of marriage.
