Where to Get a Marriage Licence in P.E.I.

Marriage licences in Prince Edward Island are issued by authorized Marriage Licence Issuers, located throughout the province in both public offices and private businesses.

Important: Both people getting married must appear together in person to apply. You cannot apply online or through a proxy.

To find a local issuer, contact:
Vital Statistics – Government of Prince Edward Island

Note: Your P.E.I. licence is only valid for weddings held within the province. Learn more about this rule in our guide on why your marriage licence must match your wedding location.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for a marriage licence in P.E.I., you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
(Ages 16–17 may apply with written parental consent)
  • Be mentally capable of understanding the marriage contract
  • Be unmarried at the time of application
  • Not be closely related by blood or adoption

Prince Edward Island recognizes same-sex marriages, and you don’t need to be a resident of the province to apply.

If you're planning from outside the province, check out our Canada-wide marriage licence guide to ensure you meet every legal requirement.

What to Bring

When applying for your licence, both applicants must provide:

  • Government-issued photo ID (e.g. driver’s licence, passport)
  • Full names and birthplaces of both parents
  • Divorce certificate (final decree or certificate, if previously married)
  • Death certificate (if widowed)

Tip: Requirements may vary slightly by issuer, so confirm in advance. Add this task to your Canadian wedding planning timeline to keep things on schedule.

How Long Is It Valid?

Once issued, your marriage licence is valid for 3 months (90 days).
There is no waiting period, which means you can legally marry the same day the licence is issued, as long as all other conditions are met.

If you're traveling in for a destination wedding, make sure your ceremony date falls within that 90-day window. Review common marriage licence timing mistakes to avoid issues.

After the Wedding

Your officiant will complete the marriage documents and submit them to Vital Statistics – P.E.I. for registration.

Once processed, you can order your official marriage certificate, which serves as your legal proof of marriage.
