Where to Get a Marriage Licence in Ontario

Marriage licences are issued by municipal offices across the province. You can apply at any:

  • City hall
  • Town hall
  • Municipal clerk’s office

You do not have to apply in the same municipality where your wedding is taking place.

Tip: Most offices require appointments. Be sure to check your local city or town website for current hours, fees, and forms before heading in.

Do You Both Need to Be There?

Nope—only one partner needs to go in person to apply. But they must bring all the required documentation for both people.

Ontario does not accept online, email, or proxy applications.

Who Can Get Married in Ontario?

To be eligible for a marriage licence, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (or 16–17 with written parental consent)
  • Be mentally capable of consenting to marriage
  • Be unmarried
  • Not be closely related by blood or adoption

Same-sex marriages are fully legal in Ontario. There’s no residency requirement, so out-of-province and international couples are welcome to apply.
